A Man Who Escaped from Prison Is Rearrested as He Attempts to Board a Bus to Tijuana
After breaking out of a Nevada prison last month, a man who was convicted of murder in 2007 is once again in custody. The man, whose name is Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, was caught some weeks ago in Las Vegas, and a day after, authorities disclosed some new details on his capture.
The 42-year-old Duarte-Herrera was about to take a bus heading to Tijuana, Mexico before officers of the LVMPD (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) caught him. The officers approached the escaped prisoner with caution.
One of the officers said to him not to be stupid and to put his hands back. They asked him where he was going, and he responded Tijuana. Tijuana is 348 miles south of Las Vegas. It will take at least 5 hours from Las Vegas to get there by bus.
Until his daring escape last month, Porfirio Duarte-Herrera had been a prisoner at the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs, Nevada. He has been at the correctional center since 2010. Four days passed before corrections officials realized he had escaped. When agencies learned of his flight, they immediately began a thorough investigation.
At a press conference, Joseph Lombardo, who is serving as the sheriff of Clark County, declared that the incident eventually ended well. Lombardo praised the media and agencies’ efforts in distributing and publicizing the photo of the suspect.
Bus Station Worker Who Notified the Police Is Praised
Joseph Lombardo mentioned that a bus station worker recognized the fugitive and called Metro police. The worker was aware of his photo. At a press conference, Branden Clarkson, who is the Captain at LVMPD, said one of the things they were worried about was Porfirio Duarte-Herrera escaping the state or the country. To prevent this, they had to flag all transportation hubs in the valley, especially bus depots.
Officials say that the $30K reward offered for Porfirio Duarte-Herrera’s capture will likely be given to the employee who recognized him and called the police. The employee will get all or some of the $30k reward.
Actions of Prison Guards Will Be Reviewed
The prison guards’ actions in relation to Porfirio Duarte-Herrera’s escape will be examined by the Inspector General for the Nevada Department of Corrections. The prisoner’s escape incensed Gov. Steve Sisolak, Nevada’s Governor. Steve Sisolak is Joe Lombardo’s opponent in the upcoming election for governor of the state.
Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio was killed at the Luxor casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Porfirio Duarte-Herrera was found to be responsible for the murder. Antonio died after a pipe bomb detonated on the roof of the casino’s parking garage. In connection with the incident, Porfirio Duarte-Herrera and Omar Rueda-Denvers, a second defendant, were found guilty of murder using a deadly weapon. Prosecutors sought the death penalty for both defendants. Both were given life sentences without the possibility of parole. For those not familiar, “parole” refers to the act of a prisoner being released before the sentence finishes in case they behave well.
