Daniel Negreanu Ends His Barren Spell
After two years and a few losses, Daniel Negreanu has finally won another major poker tournament. The Canadian poker pro and six-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) winner, beat out the competition to win over $3.3 million at SHRB VII (Super High Roller Bowl). The tournament was held at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Some weeks ago, the action came down to a final table that would leave one person sad. Only four out of the remaining five participants could end up with the money.
In the end, Orpen Kisacikoglu, who began the last table action as the short stack, took the disliked role of bubble man. Andrew Lichtenberger defeated him with a smooth board and Q-Q vs. A-Q. From there, Daniel Negreanu realized he had a chance to win the title.
Determination to End Losing Streak Pays Off
In the same event in 2018, Justin Bonomo defeated Negreanu in the final heads-up match. He missed out on the top prize this time but still received $720,000. According to Hendon Mob, that was sufficient to propel him to the top of the All-Time Money List with $57.7 million.
Andrew Lichtenberger found little luck as the game went on. He stumbled and became the short stack. Daniel Negreanu outplayed him with A-6 over K-6. Andrew Lichtenberger, the US pro, still added $1.15M to his $13M in live tournament winnings.
Only Daniel Negreanu and Nick Petrangelo were left after this. Heads-up got off to an extremely unbalanced start, as Daniel Negreanu had a significant chip lead. Nick Petrangelo had only about 1.3 million, whereas Daniel Negreanu was sitting on a stack of about 6 million.
During the first half-hour of play, the match’s inertia did not seem to change. Daniel Negreanu was motivated to end his two-year losing streak. He methodically chipped away at Nick Petrangelo’s stack, wearing him down.
The Hand That Altered the Tides
Earlier in the 24-player tournament, Daniel Negreanu scored a monster hand that completely altered the tides. Daniel Negreanu, nicknamed “Kid Poker,” lost more than $1 million during the WSOP this year. He took a beating at the Poker Masters $50K event. Unfazed, he started getting ready for the subsequent event right away.
It paid off, and he was able to get his revenge for the beating he had suffered from the previous event. He maintained his position with a weak 3-3 against Bryn Kenney early on, not realizing that Kenney sat on pocket Aces.
Bryn Kenney took the early lead with a 5k bet, to which Daniel Negreanu responded. Bryn Kenney appreciated his trip Aces when the flip revealed A-5-4. However, Daniel Negreanu was also considering the possibility of a straight. After Daniel Negreanu checked, Bryn Kenney pushed out another 5K in chips. Daniel Negreanu called.
The turning point was the turn. Negreanu gained hope and trips from A 3. Unaware that Bryn Kenney was sitting on a set, he threw out 10,000 in chips, with Kenney immediately following. However, what gave Negreanu the card that protected him from defeat was the river as the 3 on it created Kid Poker quads.
