Eagles Win 2025 Super Bowl Against Odds Favoring Chiefs
Last Sunday, February 9, the Philadelphia Eagles won the 2025 Super Bowl against the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the wagering odds across popular sportsbooks being against them, the Eagles defeated the Chiefs 40–22. This serves as a rematch following the Chiefs victory two years prior. Stay tuned as we go over the highlights of the 2025 Super Bowl.
The Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Kansas City Chief
The big finale, a long-awaited rematch between two powerhouses, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, took place on Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans. The Eagles defeated the Chiefs with a score of 40-22 and secured their second Super Bowl title. They also prevented their opponents from achieving what would’ve been a historic third consecutive championship.
The Philadelphia Eagles started strong, leading the first half of the game 24-0. In the second half, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to perform better, scoring 22 points, including a 50-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy. However, this wasn’t enough to overcome the Eagles, who added 16 more points to their score.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans is the second championship for the Eagles, with the first one back in 2018 when they won against the New England Patriots.
According to reporters, Travis Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, said his team “hadn’t played that bad all year”. There was a lot of disappointment from both the Chiefs and their fans, who were hoping for a record-breaking third consecutive Super Bowl win. But what about the sportsbooks across the US?
Sports Betting Records
There are many US states with legal sportsbook apps, including New York, where mobile sports betting was legalized in January 2022. That said, the Super Bowl LIX finale was expected to break another record – the amount wagered by retail and online gamblers. Some reports estimated this to be around $1.5 billion. While the final numbers are not in yet, according to Nielsen preliminary data, around 126 million viewers watched the Super Bowl finale, which is also a record.
An interesting report released by GeoComply shows that there was a 14% year-on-year increase in the number of active online betting accounts across US sportsbooks on Super Bowl Day. The fact that the Philadelphia Eagles were the underdogs is another benefit for retail and online sportsbooks in the country.
Halftime Highlights: Epic Performances and VIP Guests
Another significant highlight of the event was the halftime performance by Pulitzer and 22 Grammy-award winner Kendrick Lamar. The epic show included guest stars like Samuel L Jackson, Serena Williams, and SZA. Another multi-Grammy award winner, Jon Batiste, sang the national anthem before the start of the game.
The audience at the Superdome Stadium also had its fair share of VIP watchers. Starting with billionaire singer and songwriter Taylor Swift (Travis Kelce’s girlfriend), who was jokingly booed by the fans of the Philadelphia Eagles, and ending with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Eric Trump and his wife, Lara Trump, were also among the guests at the event.
