North Carolina Betting Revenue Doubles Month to Month in January

An aerial view of Charlotte North CarolinaAfter a difficult month in December, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported its third-highest revenue return from legalized sports betting in January. The $13.4 million falls short of the $18.9 million in April and the $14 million in November.

A Promising Month

In December 2024, North Carolina recorded its lowest hold of the financial year. Sports game outcomes left operators with just 5.67% hold for the month. The hold is calculated using the gross wagering revenue as a percentage of total wagering revenue.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported a sports betting handle of $623.3 million for January 2025 and gross wagering revenue of $74.5 million. These figures show an increase of 108.7% from the revenue generated during December last year.

January was a promising month and showed a good recovery. The promotional wagering revenue increased by 44.4% month-over-month, showing that sportsbooks were ramping up advertising and giving away more promotional credit than the previous month. This is probably due to the lead-up to the Super Bowl LIX, one of the major sporting events in the United States.

North Carolina sportsbook operators saw profit generally coming from favorable sporting results. December was one of the worst-performing months for operators; with August being the only month with lower revenue generated.

The performance in January sees the state back in line with more of the typical performance trends.

North Carolina’s Sports Betting History

North Carolina launched online sports betting in March 2024. This allowed eleven professional sports organizations and venues across the state to partner with online sports betting companies.

Following the general trend in the United States, the legal betting age is 21. In May 2024, Rep. Marcia Morey filed H967 to ban proposition betting on amateur and college sports, but this bill died.

There is an 18% gross wagering revenue tax rate implemented, and daily fantasy sports are legal as a betting medium. Currently, there is no talk of online casino expansion in the Tar Heel state.
